Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Journalists play a pivotal role in fostering accountability by investigating and exposing issues that undermine societal progress, such as corruption, abuse of power, and poor governance. In Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, the journalistic landscape is shaped by a mix of traditional and digital media platforms, which offer new opportunities for ethical reporting and accountability (Danladi & Yusuf, 2023). Ethical journalism, characterized by accuracy, fairness, and impartiality, is essential for maintaining public trust and promoting transparency in governance. However, the challenges faced by journalists in Zaria, including political interference, safety risks, and financial constraints, often hinder their ability to report ethically and hold power to account (Abdullahi et al., 2024). Moreover, the rise of misinformation and sensationalism further complicates the media’s role in strengthening accountability. Globally, scholars have highlighted the importance of ethical journalism in sustaining democratic practices, emphasizing the need for journalists to adhere to professional codes of conduct while navigating complex socio-political environments (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). This study seeks to explore the contributions of journalists in Zaria to accountability and how ethical practices can be reinforced to enhance their impact.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Zaria, the effectiveness of journalists in strengthening accountability through ethical reporting is often compromised by systemic and environmental challenges. Journalists frequently operate under conditions that undermine their independence and ability to adhere to ethical standards, such as inadequate legal protections, low remuneration, and political intimidation (Garba & Suleiman, 2024). Additionally, the increasing prevalence of unverified and biased reporting has eroded public trust in the media, limiting its capacity to serve as a watchdog. While several studies have examined the broader role of media in governance, there is limited research on the specific contributions of journalists in Zaria and the barriers they face in promoting accountability through ethical reporting. This gap underscores the need for targeted research to identify practical strategies for empowering journalists in this regard.
